Iron Chef- Bonnyrigg

As 2024 came to an end, I had a friend inform me of a restaurant in Bonnyrigg that had a limited time discount and we decided to take advantage of the 40% off to try out Iron Chef. It had been some time since I had visited an authentic dimsum restaurant and when I heard they had the steamer carts, it cemented my decision to visit.

Freddie Wong once went viral with his 3.5★ rule on Yelp Reviews, saying that with a mid-tiered score, you would be likely to find the most authentic Chinese food due to the differences in service expectations- the venue confident enough in their food to not impact overall ratings, though the service often feels wanting. Iron Chef Bonnyrigg sits at 3.2★ on Google Reviews and the service we had in person reflected that as well.

Most of the servers present were attentive to our needs with the dimsum carts stopping around our 3 man table frequently. However, due to this, it felt noticeable that food not served on the steamed carts took a while to arrive with us having to remind them of our order of egg tarts, mango pancakes and fried rice to go several times.

Cheung Fun ( 腸粉

A longtime favourite of mine, cheung fun is a sign of great skill when the rice noodle roll is translucent with a teasing glimpse at the filling within and the texture light and silky.

A classic spread

We ordered a combination of braised chicken feet, tripe and tendon, pork and prawn siew mai, hargao and some crystal dumplings with chives served alongside some Chinese Tea.

Egg Tart ( 港式蛋挞 )

With the varieties of egg tarts in the world, I find myself returning to the familiar embrace of my childhood.

The pastry on the egg tarts were light and flaky, the filling smooth and jiggly like a light and well made custard.

As dimsum is typically had in the company of a large groups of friends and family, I do believe that a revisit is necessary for me to try more of their menu items before I can fully conclude if Iron Chef Bonnyrigg will make its way onto my staple list permanently.

From what I have tasted, there are some items on the menu that are worth revisiting, their taste profiles close to what I am used to at home and close enough to be within reach of our residence in Western Sydney.
