Hoon Sik Dang- Rhodes, NSW

With the arrival of the blistering summer sun, the annual desire to have some Korean cold noodles known as mul naeng myeon ( 물냉면 ) has resurged with the rise in temperatures.

I first had mul naeng myeon a long time ago in the daily sweltering heat of Singapore, the light and tangy broth then really made an impact on my mind and since my first introduction to Korean food, I have spent time in search of the best mul naeng myeon that I can find.

The journey since I started living in Sydney has sparsely taken me through the city, Epping, Strathfield and Lidcombe before we finally made our way out to Hoon Sik Dang one sweltering afternoon.

Mul Naeng Myeon ( 물냉면 )

The broth in Hook Sik Dang is light, tangy and refreshing, the noodles are chewy but just the right amount and also not “burned” by the ice making it too hard.

Though condiments were provided on the side, the broth itself was standout that I personally felt that it did not require any adjustments at all.

Pork mandoo

On the day that we visited, they were out of the prawn mandoo and we opted for the pork instead.

With the variety of simple homely meals on the menu at Hoon Sik Dang, if each of them tastes just as well as the naeng myeon, I have no doubt that we will be returning often over the course of the year, even as the weather begins to cool down as the quality of the food there is something to return for!

Even as I type out this post, I am counting down the days to the next time I can swing by again for more of Hoon Sik Dang!
