The Roe- Glen Waverley, VIC

The friendly service and fresh seafood dons at The Roe ensure that it is a regular visit for myself and my friends every trip down to Melbourne we take.

The trip to Melbourne started with a 12 hour drive, somewhat along the coast- making a few stops along the way. The dinner hour drew near as I started to consider potential locations to have dinner at close to where we would come off the highway, remembering the uni focused restaurant I had visited the year prior, and the convenient parking options it offered.

Despite the late reservation I had made, the staff had called ahead to take my order, ensuring that food would be ready and promptly delivered to the table upon our arrival especially upon hearing that we were coming from interstate and were minutes away.

Signature Sea Urchin Chawanmushi

As with every chawanmushi, this steamed egg treat is perfectly steamed, jiggly and soft, the temperature warm enough to not impact the ikura or uni placed gently atop.

★★★★★ Classic Starter option

The Roe Signature Seafood Platter

With friends, depending on the options for mains, I do enjoy getting a starting platter to share as the variety of sashimi never disappoints. My personal favourite this evening- apart from the 2 options of sea urchin, was the ponzu jelly atop the Pacific Oysters, the tartness of the jelly a refreshing and classic combination with the briny and firm pacific oysters.

Signature Buddha Jump Over The Wall Ramen

I have had various sea urchin based ramen broths before- from overwhelmingly rich to just a hint of urchin, yet this 48 hour broth found a way to incorporate both seafood elements without having them too overpowering or rich.

★★★★★

Southern Bluefin Tuna Sea Urchin Don

For every seafood lover and enjoyer, their donburi options are endless, from a seafood lover don, to dons focused on tuna and uni, solely uni focused or even solely salmon focused for salmon enjoyers.

Premium Wagyu Sea Urchin Donburi

For meat lovers who want more turf than surf- there are more wagyu options available on their menu- with foie, with uni and options available without.

This trip, the sea urchin Buddha Jumps Over the Wall ramen was the dish to contend with- an umami rich broth that was not too overpowering, this was a really unique dish that I would recommend people to try. As there were multiple temperature sensitive components in the ramen, the broth was not steaming hot which allowed us to enjoy it in its full glory, its light nature allowing us to finish the entire pot that was given to us!

For any seafood lovers, The Roe in Glen Waverley is a convenient seafood focused restaurant with their own attached parking lot. A consistent favourite due to their excellent service and fresh seafood, I endeavour to return any chance that I can get as this is an excellent place to visit for a treat!
